Several states, including Minnesota, have recently completed research to develop new pile design formulas using the LRFD mandated by AASHTO. This project will create design plans and fabricate a re-usable test frame for use in conducting static load tests in Minnesota, the data from which will be used to relating it to PDA/CAPWAP data for calibrating the LRFD model.

The Contractor responded to meeting requests and requests for information quickly and efficiently. They performed the work in a timely manner. The contractor also effectively partnered with the Bridge Office to perform design calculations and reviews.
The contractor delivered the expected products in a timely manner. There was good collaboration between the project managers and project stakeholders. The deliverables met or exceeded expectations as this challenging project evolved.
The costs for engineering services were reasonable. A significant share of the project cost was for materials, fabrication, and production expenses associated with the load frame assembly. Plans were developed that were effectively used to fabricate the load frame which was then successfully used on a construction project.
The contractor completed the design drawings and detailing and coordinated transfer of the design information to the fabricator so that the steel order could be placed in time to receive the materials to then assemble and construct the load frame in sufficient time for the inaugural load test. The engineers collaborated well with the Bridge Office and the project manager and tasks were performed in a timely manner. There was a good working relationship and cooperation to deliver the work and make necessary improvements, modifications, and revisions and corrections based on the input from the Department. The first static load test using the load frame was successful, and the instrumentation drawings are being used on subsequent projects. There were a few detailing errors that were later corrected (related to the high tension bars used as part of the system).
