Hawk Creek, Yellow Medicine River, and Beaver Cree
CR2050
The Hawk/Yellow Medicine Watershed, an 8-digit HUC (07020004), has traditionally been managed as two separate watersheds, the Hawk Creek watershed to the north of the Minnesota River and the Yellow Medicine River Watershed to the South of the Minnesota River. Both waterways enter the Minnesota River downstream of Granite Falls, MN. Under MPCA’s new Watershed Approach, these sub-watersheds will be combined and assessed as one watershed.

In addition to integrating the Yellow Medicine watershed, this amended work plan reflects the shift to the Watershed Approach in that it focuses on developing a watershed model. A watershed model that can provide predictions of flow and pollutant loading, as well as responses to watershed management activities, is considered a key element of the Watershed Approach. While the activities contained in this work plan do not constitute everything that is required for a comprehensive watershed restoration and protection study, modeling is a foundational piece. The remainder of the watershed study will be completed beginning in late 2011.

The final report will have specific watershed information developed for the Hawk Creek, Beaver Creek, and Yellow Medicine River areas. Descriptions of the Hawk Creek and Yellow Medicine watersheds and their respective management organizations.

The scope of the project was changed from a TMDL development project to an HSPF modeling project. Theworkplan, budget and Gantt chart was adjusted accordingly.

Good
Excellent - This was a difficult project with a major workplan revision and limited time to complete the revised objectives and produce the new deliverables. All things considered the Hawk Creek Watershed Project did an excellent job under less than desirable conditions. Additionally, the deliverables will be benificial to both the Watershed Project and MPCA.
