Matrix Riprap Implementation MPR-1(004)
99136
Matrix riprap (aka Partially Grouted Riprap) is a relatively new scour countermeasure technique in the US. Construction specifications have been developed for use in Minnesota; however implementation has been a challenge due to lack of expertise. The Consultant selected for this project will provide training for Mn/DOT personnel in the basic design and installation of Matrix Riprap on bridge abutments. In addition, the Consultant will provide technical guidance and supervision during installation of the Matrix Riprap at a preselected bridge site in District 3. Once installation is complete the Consultant will provide a white paper/manual and comments that will be used to revise the Matrix Riprap special provision and design details.

Ayres Associates is the only consultant with expertise in Matrix Riprap technology. Only two construction projects in
the US have used Matrix Riprap in compliance with the FHWA's national design guideline, and both were designed
and installed by Ayres Associates. In addition, Paul Clopper of Ayres Associates wrote the FHW A's national design
guideline for pier protection using Matrix Riprap, Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 23 (HEC-23). Ayers Associates
is the only cor.tractor with demonstrated expertise to customize a design and write an installation guideline for Matrix
Riprap Abutment Protection in the state of Minnesota.
