The intent of this project is to provide an inventory of resource needs and fill in gaps in water quality data within the East Fork Des Moines River Watershed. While Lake Okamanpeedan is the primary water body of concern, the entire East Fork Watershed in Minnesota will be assessed.

An in-the-field resource needs inventory of the river and tributaries will be conducted in conjunction with a native plant species/populations inventory that will be conducted as part of a LCCMR Grant project. Landowners and Farm Operators will be involved in the inventory as well as in the planning of measures that may be needed to mitigate problems that are identified.

A high priority component of the project is to involve as many citizens as possible in assessing the watershed and gathering water quality and quantity information. Citizen stream monitors will be set up on approximately nine key locations on tributaries to the East Fork and one location on the River. Citizen Lake Monitors will be assigned locations on four lakes within the watershed. On high priority sites, staff will provide the monitoring until citizen monitors can be set up.

The Natural Resoures Conservation Service Water Resources Staff are providing a Rapid Watershed Assessment, pulling together existing data on the watershed. They will be providing guidance and assistance with the monitoring needs of the watershed as well as in selecting the physical inventory methods. Minnesota State University, Mankato is also providing some of the technical assistance for setting up and maintaining the monitoring program.

The MPCA and Minnesota State University, Mankato will provide support in training regarding safety, sampling and handling procedures and the use and maintenance of equipment.

The Okamanpeedan Watershed Alliance is in the process of forming an official Joint Powers Board for the purpose of providing a unified body to oversee monitoring and inventory activities during the assessment period and to guide the development of an implementation plan for the watershed.
