SWAG-09 Cannon River Watershed Stream and Lake Ass
CR2342
The Cannon River watershed is an approximately 941,000 acre area in southeastern Minnesota, located south of the Metro Area. Portions of this watershed have been assessed for impairments and are now on the 303(d) list for turbidity, nutrients, and mercury. This project will focus on assessing the lakes and streams in the Cannon River Watershed that have not been assessed to determine if they are meeting their designated uses. Some of these lakes and streams have data for certain pollutants, but not enough to complete an impairment assessment. The river and stream reaches are located in Dakota, Goodhue, Le Sueur, Rice, and Steele counties. The lakes are mainly located in the Upper Cannon watershed (Le Sueur, Rice, and Waseca Counties); one of four lobes of the Cannon River watershed. We will enhance the existing data sets for the water bodies noted above and determine if the waters need to be added to the impaired waters list. Lakes will be sampled for total phosphorus, chlorophyll-a, and secchi depths at least 6 times in 2009. The number of samples per lake will vary depending on existing data. The stream sampling will be based on the predetermined parameters (Section III).
