Nemadji River Watershed Stream Assessment Project
CR3303
This project, in conjuction with additional projects, will aid in a comprehensive effort to assess the health of the streams of the Nemadji River Watershed, which appears on the MPCA's list of targeted watershed's for the 2010-11 field seasons. The Carlton County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Division, Minnesota DNR Ecological Resources Division, Wisconsin DNR, and University of Wisconsin-Lake Superior Reasearch Institute have collaborated to carry out a thorough assessment of the Nemadji River Watershed through watershed data collection.
Water quality is listed as a high priority concern in the current Carlton County Water Plan. Collection of data proposed in this project will aid Carlton County in the goal of collecting water quality data per the listed goal of the Water Plan.
This project will focus on collecting stream water quality data. Citizen volunteers and SWCD staff will complete water quality monitoring on two targeted stream sites in the watershed and eight additional sites including prospective MPCA biological assessment sites and DNR-Fisheries priority sites. Partnering agencies listed above will collect biological data including fish, macroinvertebrate, and habitat data, and additional water quality data throughout the Nemadji River watershed both in Wisconsin and Minnesota through proposed projects to various funding sources and through programs already existing within these agencies.
SWCD staff and citizen volunteers have shown recent success in collecting water quality monitoring data through the Nemadji River Turbidity TMDL Project. SWCD staff have collected water quality data specific to the turbidity study and volunteers have collected additional stream clarity data and precipitation data.
This project will expand citizen participation into the assessment of streams in the watershed which are not included in the current TMDL study and expand data collection to a wider set of parameters. Volunteers are eager to complete additional monitoring of the streams in the Nemadji River watershed to learn more about the health of the streams. Additionally, volunteers will learn about partnering agency efforts in the watershed at a gathering where agencies will present data to volunteers. This gathering will also inform citizens about the process of watershed assessment in relation to TMDL projects and recognize the efforts of the volunteers.
