Chisago Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program
CR1613
The Chisago Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program will involve the collection of in-lake samples by volunteers. Lakes have been selected based on size and lack of water quality monitoring data. Each lake that has the potential to be sampled is over 22 acres in size. The final list of lakes will be determined based on volunteer response.

Volunteer monitors will be approached through a variety of ways. These will include: direct mailings, press releases, websites, and newsletters. These volunteers that are selected will be asked to attend a training workshop. At this workshop they will learn monitoring protocols. They will also receive the supplies for the monitoring season.

Volunteers will collect surface water samples to be analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and chlorophyll-a (CLA). In addition, they will measure water transparency (using a Secchi disk), surface water temperature, and user observations (time, date, recreational suitability, and weather observations). Lakes will be visited biweekly from May through September (ten sampling dates), and be sampled at the lake's deepest open water location. After monitoring, samples that are collected will be submitted to an analytical laboratory for chemical analysis. Once per year the Chisago SWCD will take a quality control sample on each lake. This will be done to assure that the lab samples are accurate.

Data from the years sampling will be compiled when the data is received from the laboratory. The data will be entered into STORET in order to be accessed by MPCA and other professionals. After the data is collected it will be compiled into easy to read data that will be shared with lake associations, volunteers, and other county residents. The findings from this data will help the waters be assessed and determined if the waterbodies are healthy or impaired.
