Shell Rock River Watershed Assessment Program
CR850
The Shell Rock River Watershed District is a 246-square-mile watershed district in Freeborn County, Minnesota. The District was formed in 2004 as the result of citizen interest in the area’s water resources. The District is home to many special features, including the area’s lakes, which are considered the area’s most significant natural asset. They determine the ability of the District, Freeborn County, The City of Albert Lea and surrounding areas to attract residents, draw tourists, and maintain a clean environment. The lakes are ecologically, recreationally and economically important to the health of the entire Watershed District.

The original goal of this project is to complete the nutrient impairment assessment for the 6 major lakes in the Shell Rock River Watershed District, with the ultimate goal of improving water quality and the shallow lake system. The District accomplished the goal for three of the lakes resulting in the 303(d) listing of 4 basins of Albert Lea Lake, Fountain and Pickerel Lakes for nutrients prior to the end of the grant. Since grant funds can no longer be used for these waters, this section of the grant has been updated to reflect these listings. The following is a summary of the slight redirection in goals and objections.
