Since the project is receiving federal funding, MnDOT's Cultural Resources Unit (CRU), on behalf of the Federal Highway Administration (FHW A), is required to ensure that the effects of the project on cultural resources is being taken into account as per the requirements of 36CFR800 (section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act). lt was necessary to use a Contract on this project since no state-employed personnel who meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Standards for cultural resource studies on FHWA-funded projects were available to complete the work in a timely manner due to work load.
