PHAB Re-Accreditation process
{Empty}
MDH voluntarily seeks public health reaccreditation, which is available only through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). PHAB provides a continuum of services leading up to the decision of its Accreditation Committee whether to reaccredit an agency that has received accreditation status previously and follow up support for a period of five years. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has encouraged all state, local, territorial, and tribal public health entities to pursue voluntary accreditation and reaccreditation. Reaccreditation, if granted, will last for a full five years before there is a need to re-apply. Voluntary reaccreditation ensures that MDH complies with standards and practices developed by public health experts. It also ensures that MDH has the ability to communicate with and learn from other public health agencies that are also dedicated to pursuing the highest standards and continuous compliance with accreditation standards and practices.

The CDC and other major national public health organizations worked together to develop and maintain national public health accreditation standards through PHAB. The goal of PHAB is to maintain a national, non-profit, accreditation entity to support accreditation of state, local and tribal health departments across the country. PHAB receives financial support as well as in-kind support, incentives, technical assistance, and other support directly from the CDC which makes it uniquely situated to make accreditation decisions that are based on strict national public health accreditation standards endorsed by the CDC. There is no other such entity in the United States that accredits public health departments. PHAB accreditation standards apply to the health department as a whole and are the only such standards in the United States.
