Cottonwood/Redwood Rivers Project
CR2026
The watersheds of the Redwood River, Cottonwood River and the first order streams above and between the two major basins encompasses approximately 2,269.23 square miles and include portions of 4 of the thirteen major watersheds in the Minnesota River Basin. The major tributaries of the Redwood and Cottonwood Rivers originate on the Coteau des Prairies, flowing eastward approximately 152 miles to the Minnesota River with a drop in elevation of about 750 feet. This topography results in periodic spring and summer flooding in the central portion of the watershed. At times, damages are severe. A related implication is rapid transport of sediment and attached nutrients from inadequately treated cropland during spring snowmelt and spring and summer rainfall events.
