Watershed Specialist Training Phase 1
CR2934
To create an on-line watershed specialist training curriculum that is adapted to the needs of local and state natural resource managers in Minnesota. The curriculum will incorporate portions of watershed training curricula from other states as well as topics specific to Minnesota, as needed. This work plan covers Phase I of a three phase project. Completion of this component is the first step in attaining the eventual goal of having a watershed specialist training program in Minnesota. When all phases of this project are completed, this training program is intended to be made available statewide, via the worldwide web to local officials, consultants and students with interests in the water management field.

The curriculum will cover the most important principles of watershed science and management, with the goal of improving the way that watershed projects are designed and managed in Minnesota. The curriculum will address the sciences of hydrology, geology, biology, and geomorphology as well as the legal, social and programmatic requirements of watershed management.

Phase I – funded by this grant – involves defining training needs and developing a web-based watershed management curriculum. If funding is available, Phase II would implement the training curriculum (web design and web installation) and evaluation of its effectiveness. envision that the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center would operate and maintain the training program, similar to other training programs that have been developed (University of Minnesota’s OSTP training, Michigan State University, Purdue, etc.). We hope to also explore the possibility of a field training component during future phases of the project.

Some invoices were submitted incorrectly: or several months there was not enough detail revealed on the invoices to know if monies were correctly utilized. The U of M had previously utilized a more basic invoice that we accepted for many years. However, in the middle of this project, the Watershed Section began requiring more detialed invoicing for all projects. For a number of months, there were struggles getting the new invoice spreadsheet correctly filled out. The issues were resolved by the end of the contract and corrections were made to the spreadsheets.
