Summarize purpose of the contract, including why it was necessary: The goals of this research are segregated between short and long term goals. Short term goals include: 1) identify and document hardware/software that will adapt to the existing control systems being utilized by various DOTs (both granular and liquid) focusing on limited input of ambient and roadway temperatures; 2) analyze the cost-effectiveness of those identified systems; and 3) create a reference guide that recommends cost-effective approaches to consider retro-fitting existing equipment to support automatic dispensing. Included in this analysis should be the necessary interface with an Automatic Vehicle Location/Geographic Information System (AVL/GIS) system that will facilitate automatic deployment of the material. Long term goals include: 1) identify and document best practices, procedures and materials for a more comprehensive automatic dispensing system that utilizes multiple inputs to include but not limited to real time weather information, Maintenance Decisions Support System inputs (where available) and GIS/Global Positioning System/AVL technologies in order to accommodate and interpret vehicle location, roadway classification and proper treatment criterion; 2) analyze the cost-effectiveness of the most promising systems/practices, procedures and hardware/software identified; and 3) create a reference guide that recommends cost-effective approaches to consider when ordering new equipment or retrofitting existing equipment.
