Summarize purpose of the contract, including why it was necessary: The purpose of the contract was to quantify Polonium-210 in Minnesota water samples. Polonium-210 emits alpha radiation that is very difficult to measure precisely, and requires specialized laboratory methods and equipment. The amount of polonium-210 has never been quantified in MN groundwater until this project. MDH needed to quantify the levels of Polonium-210 to assess the potential risk to human health resulting from radionuclide contamination in drinking water drawn from groundwater sources.
