The objective of this research was to identify best practices for social media use by local units of government for public
communication about transportation infrastructure and community development projects. This research documented best
practices and lessons learned by public agencies regarding all aspects of social media. It provided guidance to agencies on
what technology and tools are available and how to use and implement best practices in their usage of social media for public
works communication. It was necessary to enter into a contract to use the expertise of an organization that understood the
scope of work required.
